Congressman Ron Paul has been declared the emphatic winner of
the first ever National Presidential Caucus, a collation of results
from Democrat, Republican and "open" caucus groups that
were organised independently online and caucused face-to-face
across the nation on December 7th.
Results were tallied from 19 independently formed
caucus groups (Republican, Democrat, and open) that met on Friday,
December 7th, 2007 in the following locations:
Dallas, TX (2D); Sarcoxie, MO (O); Boise, ID (R);
Needham, MA (D); Carthage, MO (O); Manhattan, KS (D & R);
Pineville, MO (O); Richmond, MO (O); Costa Mesa, CA (O); Springfield
MO (R); Winston-Salem, NC (O); Overland Park, KS (R); New York
City, NY (O); and Joplin, MO (R), Warrensburg, MO (R), Roselle
Park, NK (D), and Philadelphia, PA (O).
While some groups were small informal gatherings,
others attracted hundreds of people including some party officials
and campaign staff. Before voting was undertaken, discussions
were held on several key issues with deliberation on the stance
of individual candidates factored in.
The NPC's official
press release announced the results:
Barack Obama wins over Democrat voters generating
40% of Democrat Caucus voter preferences. Obama was followed
by a three-way tie for second, with John Edwards, Bill Richardson
and "Undecided" each generating 20% of Democratic
Caucus preferences.
On the Republican side, Ron Paul obliterated the field for
the GOP generating the preference of 50% of GOP Caucuses. Mike
Huckabee and Fred Thompson follow, generating 33.3% and 16.6%
of Republican Caucus preferences, respectively.
Among votes in Open Caucuses, Ron Paul wins with 62.5% of Open
Caucus votes, followed by Barack Obama (18.75%), Fred Thompson
(12.5%), and Hilary Clinton (6.25%).
The
National Presidential Caucus describes itself as
"the product of a consortium of partisan, bi-partisan and
non-partisan interests who seek to demonstrate how local, self-organized,
web-enabled face-to-face gatherings is the new basis for participatory
democracy".
Supporting organisations include Stanford University's
Center for Deliberative Democracy, popular political website Politics
Online and the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.
The group has received endorsements from former US Senators, university
professors and chairs of independent political organisations.
The group has also received mainstream attention
from outlets such as CBS,
the Washington Post and the New York Times.
The results once again show that Ron Paul has widespread
support all over the country as he continues to dispel the mainstream
media perpetuated myth that he is a second tier candidate.

Meanwhile with 4 days still to go before the Ron
Paul Boston Tea Party fundraising event this Sunday,
the Congressman's coffers have soared to a total of $11.3 million
for the quarter at time of writing. This means that Paul's campaign
could hit its target of $12 million before Sunday's event, which
has so far seen almost 30,000 people pledge to donate at least
$100.
Given that last time 17,500 pledges equated to 4.3
million, 33,000 pledges could equate to just under double that
amount, meaning an unprecedented record breaking $8 million super
haul is definitely on the cards. At the very least Paul looks
certain to break his own record of 4.3 million raised in one day
on November 5th.
Ron Paul's campaign is also
urging supporters to take a christmas vacation in
Iowa to help the Congressman place high in the caucus on Jan.
3rd. Ron Paul's Schedule and voter registration information can
be viewed here.
