Ron Paul revolution marches on

Ron Paul's presidential campaign is set to raise millions in one
day for the third time in as many months as thousands of supporters
hit the internet to donate to the latest "money bomb".
Over 10,000 visitors to the website http://www.freeatlast2008.com/
have pledged to donate to Dr Paul today, but many
more are expected to take part in the mass donation day organized
by grass roots supporter Trevor Lyman.
At time of writing over $700,000 dollars has already
been raised by supporters who are saluting Martin Luther King
day by donating to the candidate who is campaigning on a platform
of peace and individual liberty.
The total can be tracked throughout the day via
the graph below.
(Article continues below)
Lyman was the brains behind the record breaking
donation days on November 5th and December 15th last year that
raised $4.3 and $6 million respectively, pushing Paul's fourth
quarter earnings to around $20 million, making him the biggest
GOP fundraiser closing out 2007.
Without such dedicated support the Congressman's
campaign would have been hard pushed to continue beyond last week's
primaries, but Ron Paul has emphatically pledged to stay in the
race for the long haul.
"Most of the mainstream media continue to pretend
that we do not exist," reads Paul's statement. "Yet
soon the race will be down to four candidates-Romney, McCain,
Huckabee, and me, and there is no stopping us, as Tim Russert
grudgingly pointed out the other night. Thanks to you, we are
in this all the way through a brokered convention." Paul
wrote on his website yesterday after placing second in the Nevada
caucus.
"We can't let this movement be stopped, nor
slowed. I promise you that I will continue to pour all my heart
and mind and strength into the battle," he concluded.
In addition to the donation day, supporters are
taking to the streets in every major city in the US with thousands
of marches and meetups organized via http://www.ronpaulmarch.com/
and http://ronpaul.meetup.com/
The rest of Ron Paul's written statement, below, focuses on his
admiration for Dr. King. Paul calls him a "great freedom
fighter," and says King would be disappointed with the current
president's approach toward civil rights.
PAUL STATEMENT:
“It is especially fitting that we take the time to reflect
on one man’s struggles to defend our constitutional freedoms
during this primary election season. Jan. 15 was the birthday
of the great freedom fighter, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and
on Monday, we honor him nationwide for his sacrifice and love
of liberty for all people.
“To me, the timing is more than a coincidence. The American
people, regardless of color or creed, have the opportunity to
choose a candidate who will uplift the ideals for which Dr.
King fought -- and died.
“The fight for freedom -- the preservation of our civil
rights -- is the fight of our lives. Sadly, after Dr. King’s
passing, we are faced with a violation of our civil rights in
the same vein as Jim Crow: The Patriot Act. I have stood against
this and all unconstitutional violations of Americans' civil
rights, and will continue Dr. King’s charge, as president.
“Dr. King would be disappointed in our current administration
for more than its continued disregard for civil rights, as he
stated: ‘a nation that continues year after year to spend
more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift,
is approaching spiritual doom.’
We need to change our interventionist foreign policy, and take
care of our brothers and sisters at home. Our nation is in a
crisis: we are spending billions on war overseas, while those
around us are suffering and losing jobs, homes, and hope. It
is inexcusable; we must solve the economic crisis at home, and
bring hope to America.
“Dr. King’s heroic actions should resonate with
us today, as we recognize that our votes strengthen the fight
for our civil rights. Liberty is the true antidote to racism,
and freedom -- limited, constitutional government devoted to
the protection of individual rights -- can uplift us all.”
