2008 is the year of the control freak society. We
now inhabit a world where there is no longer debate over whether
something should be banned or not, there simply exists debate
over what should be banned next.
The latest evil earth-killing product that needs
to be banned forever is the outdoor
heater:
Outdoor heaters that keep smokers warm outside
pubs and clubs could be banned as part of the battle against
climate change, costing the hospitality industry £250million
in lost trade.
Euro-MPs are expected to back a resolution calling on the European
Commission to set a timetable for abolishing goods with low
energy-efficiency ratings.
The heaters have become even more popular in the
UK since smoking was banned indoors.
Despite the fact that the effect these things actually
have has been described by climate change experts as "very
minimal" and "almost non-existent", the EU has
decided it needs to put a stop to them NOW.
"What constitutes a waste of energy is always
going to be open to debate but it is important that the public
is properly educated about environmental impacts in order to make
informed decisions on their everyday activities." Dr Eric
Johnson, National Expert Reviewer for the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) stated.
"Informed decisions" do not come into
the equation if we are told what we can and cannot do by a group
of unelected bureaucrats.
