It is one thing for President Obama’s approval
to all below 50% in the Rasmussen poll. That is among likely
voters and likely voters are sourpusses.
But for CBS News to poll him at 46% approval/ 41% disapproval
is trouble for the president. It was among all adults, not just
likely voters. The poll numbers are here.
Among independents he is at 42% approval/ 40% disapproval.
The siren should be blowing. The president is severely wounded.
This also means Rasmussen is no longer the outlier poll that
can be dismissed as ideologically tinged.
What is hurting the president’s job approval —
he remains popular (for now) — is his policies.
From the poll:
36% approve/ 54% disapprove on health care
41% approve/ 47% disapprove on the economy
55% want Gitmo open/ 32% want it closed
Then there is terrorism. Last month, before Flight 253, most
Americans (51%) thought a terroriosm attack on the United states
was not very likely or not likely at all.
Today, 66% think another attack is likely — 26% even
said “very likely.”
Even as he sinks in the ratings below 50% approval, his policies
are falling under 40. When your top priority — health
care — gets 54% disapproval, you are in trouble.
If this keeps up, Republicans will have a slogan: “My
opponent supports Obama.”
But just as what goes up must come down, what goes down must
bounce back.
Just ask George Walker Bush.
"When the people find they can vote themselves
money, that will herald the end of the republic."
