WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- It's bad enough to wake up and find someone has vandalized your car. But it's even worse to find out you may have been targeted because your car has come to symbolize big road hogging gas guzzlers everywhere.

The H2 was Gareth Grove's dream car. So when he finally bought it and fixed it up just right, he was happy man. That lasted four days.

Early Monday morning, someone came by his house and smashed it up. Neighbor Margaret Olivier saw the whole thing and called police.

About 3 o'clock in the morning, I woke up to the glass breaking, looked out my window and saw two guys with a baseball bats just wailing on the car," she said.

But they were also attacking the car with something sharp enough to write this incomplete message: "For the environ." Now police want to know if this was some sort eco-terror attack.

Neighbors were sympathetic, but everyone we talked to had a sense that the Hummer has come to be a symbol of American greed and waste on the roadways.

But Groves just likes the car. And once the $12,000 worth of damage is fixed, he plans to keep driving it.

Though he admits, this ordeal has taken some of the glitter out of owning his dream machine.
