Voters increasingly Eurosceptic: poll

Voters are increasingly opposed to the European Union, a poll for the Economist weekly has revealed, just days ahead of elections for the European Parliament.

The poll, commissioned by YouGov, shows that over the past 25 years, the percentage of Britons who think belonging to the EU is a good thing has fallen from 43 percent to 31 percent.

Those who think the EU is a "bad thing" has risen to 37 percent, up from 30 percent.

And while the bloc has expanded eastwards to boost its membership to 27 states, voters have become more and more reluctant to support greater integration. Just one in five backs the idea now compared to one in three in 1995.

The poll shows 33 percent want a less integrated Europe "with the EU amounting to little more than a free trade area".
